Small RNAs can also be used to turn off large portions of the genome near centromeres via the RITS complex. Slightly longer RNAs (piRNAs) are playing some role in germ cell development. And many more species of RNAs keep appearing. Only 10% of the RNA in a typical cell is the conventional type of RNA (i.e. mRNA). It looks as if there was a whole RNA zoo there all along and RNAi was the entry ticket.
