Directionality is energy-dependent. If this was the first study of long-term energy-dependent directionality, how did Greg Bear get so far ahead of the evidence on energy-dependent biophysically constrained human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) via “…the treatment afforded to HERV in the Cold Spring Harbor text Retroviruses, edited by Drs. Coffin, Varmus, and Hughes.”

Retroviral DNA synthesis is absolutely dependent on the two distinct [energy-dependent] enzymatic activities of RT: a DNA polymerase that can use either RNA or DNA as a template, and a nuclease, termed ribonuclease H (RNase H), that is specific for the RNA strand of RNA:DNA duplexes. Although a role for other proteins cannot be ruled out, and it is likely that certain viral proteins (e.g., nucleocapsid, NC) increase the efficiency of reverse transcription, all of the enzymatic functions required to complete the series of steps involved in the generation of a retroviral DNA can be attributed to either the DNA polymerase or the RNase H of RT.

Also, in our 1996 review of biophysically constrained RNA-mediated cell type differentiation across kingdoms, we linked pre-mRNAs, which are now called microRNAs, to everything known about healthy longevity across species in the context of energy-dependent change From Fertilization to Adult Sexual Behavior.

Small intranuclear proteins also participate in generating alternative splicing techniques of pre-mRNA and, by this mechanism, contribute to sexual differentiation in at least two species, Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans (Adler and Hajduk, 1994; de Bono, Zarkower, and Hodgkin, 1995; Ge, Zuo, and Manley, 1991; Green, 1991; Parkhurst and Meneely, 1994; Wilkins, 1995; Wolfner, 1988). That similar proteins perform functions in humans suggests the possibility that some human sex differences may arise from alternative splicings of otherwise identical genes.

…this RNA encodes a “micropeptide” (9 or 20 amino acids, MSAmiP) that is expressed exclusively in the secondary cells of the male accessory gland, where it seems to accumulate in nuclei. Importantly, loss of function of this micropeptide causes defects in sperm competition. In addition to bringing insights into the biology of a rare cell type, this work underlines the importance of small peptides, a class of molecules that is now emerging as important actors in complex biological processes.

Thomas Hunt Morgan’s works on flies (1910) have also been linked to all nutrient-dependent pheromone-regulated biodiversity via Genotype for ages 14+.
The claim that small peptides have emerged “…as important actors in complex biological processes” can be linked to obfuscation of facts that link Peptide synthesis at the origin of life 11/13/20 from light-activated carbon fixation in cyanobacteria to Visualizing a protonated RNA state that modulates microRNA-21 maturation  10/26/20, which linked quantum coherence to coherently organized biology across kingdoms via MicroRNAs organize intrinsic variation into stem cell states 3/5/20 and biophysically constrained viral latency via MicroRNA Involvement in Signaling Pathways During Viral Infection 3/10/20.
Thus, the claim that a Study uncovers first evidence of long-term directionality in origination of human mutation, challenging neo-Darwinism can be linked to the overwhelming ignorance of gene-centric theorists who failed to link God’s Creation of sunlight and humidity to constraints on mutations, which have been linked from the pathology of COVID19 to cancer, via research reported from Russia in [MicroRNAs as the Potential Regulators of SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Modifiers of the COVID-19 Clinical Features] and research reported from China in Long Non-coding RNA ZFPM2-AS1: A Novel Biomarker in the Pathogenesis of Human Cancers
Although stupid evolutionary theorists may continue to make claims about the first evidence of long-term directionality in origination of human mutation, the extant evidence can be tracked back to more than 134,500 indexed published articles that mention microRNAs. Moving forward, you need only follow the extant literature on microRNA-mediated protein folding chemistry and link it to all biodiversity on Earth, via downloading Focus on Structure to Verify Protein Function and asking for an explanation of why there was no mention of microRNAs.

5. Repetitive elements or endogenous viral elements can be targeted with engineered Cas+gRNA systems in microbes, plants, animals, or human cells to reduce deleterious transposition…(in which nearly identical copies can be problematic).

Reduction of deleterious transposition is nutrient-dependent, and pheromone-controlled genetic processes of reproduction biophysically constrain light-activated humidity and pH-dependent microRNA-mediated protein folding chemistry.
