Although the field is still in its infancy and miRNA-based drugs have not reached the market, many of such approaches are in clinical trials [5, 11]. Furthermore, circulating miRNAs that can be found in our blood systems seem to reflect specific disease states and are highly promising as biomarkers [2]. These exciting developments highlight the great potential of a research field that has been initiated by the two Nobel laureates more than 30 years ago.
